So last night I’m on the telephone with my good good friend, when the subject of new Soca music came up, now with SpiceMas and CropOver in full swing, I expected this was the “new soca” music we would be talking about or even de recent tunes from VI or Antigua ting, but as per usual it seems despite having had a Carnival that was over months ago, Trinidad & Tobago always have to get tossed or toss themselves into the mix. Anyway so I was then asked if I see de lovely Fay Ann Lyons new tune Raze video that just drop, to which I replied negative ma’am. Well it was at this point that it was explained to me that despite understanding that since Differentology de trend now is to take Soca music in a new direction and to a new global audience de video still don’t make a ras lick ah sense. So I ask for an explanation as to why it doesn’t work, I was told it just look like she and Bunji was in upstate NY playing wid the iPhone 6 new video features. Now in my mind I’m thinking naaaaaah, this is a VP Records artist, they must have a proper budget for the proper presentation for the visuals of this big tune. So I then ask, describe de video to me please. I was then told Faye Ann just prancing up and down this footpath in de snow looking like a HD scene from the movie The Ring. oooooh Hooo interest finally peaked
Now in my old life, I dabbled a few times in video production/film/TV, so when I first heard this tune an immediate treatment came to my head for a music video, now lets face it the “road to de party” has been done to death in Soca videos, but has it been done of a global scale? And since this new kinda EDM Soca fusion is being marketed to an international audience and the video already looking like a bootleg Rudimental video, why not do it properly. My vision for the video would have been a new comer to the carnival vibe, even if you want to use a white girl, can’t sleep from excitement, trying on costume all kinda thing and following her path, POV style and B roll, right to the carnival and not a local carnival, pick a Notting-Hill or Germany Carnival, but capturing de total vibe of carnival….. but that’s just me!!
Anyway that’s my take on the video, big tune, wack video, but in de long run, I guess the video don’t matter when it come to throwing waistline, so hit play!!
