Veteran Reggae singer John Holt is dead
Another day another legend in the Reggae music business has passed away. Another victim of this human scourge Cancer. John Holt first gained popularity in the 1960s as the lead singer of the Paragons. With hits like “Police in Helicopter“, “I’d Love You to Want Me“, “Stick by me“, “If I were a carpenter“, “Ali Baba” and many many more hits. Born in 1947 at the time of his death, he was 69. Another legend gone but his music will live on. It’s really a shame they don’t make reggae music like this anymore, too much rah rah nonsense in these times. But even in the all digital age, it’s great to hear that needle touch a 45 and that back-end crackling underlying the vintage musical vibes. Music like this takes me back to the days of dancehall fetes in Barbados, from Buddy’s to St Martins when licking shots was first fist on aluminum paling and board walls to the days of actual gun shots in the dance making people scatter. It’s amazing how even if you have never met a person, how their passing, even if not directly tragic and emotionally hurtful to you, still makes you reflect on your upbringing and past life experiences.
Think I’ll spend today listening to a youtube mix at the plantation.
R.I.P John Holt
