Fresh Off The Boat
Fresh Off The Boat
It looks like ABC network is set to push the racial envelop once again with their new sitcom Fresh Off The Boat , featuring an all Asian American cast, which I believe is a ground breaking television event in America. Sure Asian Americans have featured in sitcoms before, but usually are nerds, the IT guy or brainy student, the typical Asian stereotypes or effeminate over the top gay, John Cho of Harold and Kumar fame unusually breaks that mold playing non stereotypical roles.
Now I do look forward to seeing this show, especially after Blackish proved to be hugely successful, from the childhood of Eddie Huang and he’s a different guy indeed so this should be a good watch, great entertainment value, I wonder if Ms Cho will be a writer behind the scenes. The only issue I probably will have with the show so far, looking at the trailer, is the issue of an actor or two “speaking Asian“, like how Ken Jeong does in the Hangover movies, we’ve all seen him in interviews, he speaks English with perfect pitch, I don’t get the need for the ethnic lacing of the tongue, but I guess it adds to the stereotype and is kinda funny. If Asians and Asian Americans are not offended, I guess it’s really not my place to be offended either and just go with it and feel absolutely zero guilt as I am laughing my ass off.
about the show
It’s the ’90s and 12-year-old, hip-hop loving Eddie just moved to suburban Orlando from DC’s Chinatown with his parents. It’s culture shock for his immigrant family in this comedy about pursuing the American Dream.
Starring: Randall Park | Constance Wu | Hudson Yang | Forrest Wheeler | Ian Chen
